Joel is currently a resident of Oak Point, Texas, but started her career in
Detroit, Michigan. Experience and an intense interest led to a
continuing art studies at the University of Toledo, and Brookhaven
College. While there, Joel studied with nationally known artists and
instructors.
The multi-media techniques that Joel employs were influenced under
nationally renown artist, Louise Cadillac. These techniques allow for
the varied, surrealistic backgrounds that one sees in Joel's paintings.
Her earlier schooling in technique, combined with Joel's deep
appreciation of the Native American Indian, results in a detailed - yet
abstract view of a culture that is little understood today.
Joel's interest in the Indian culture began at childhood with stories of
local Michigan Indians taking the place of fairy tales. Traveling, both as
a child with her mother, and later as an adult with her own family,
provided more knowledge that is brought out in her paintings today.
As a non-Indian, Joel was reluctant to represent the Indian culture on
canvas. However, talking with Indians at Pow Wows and learning
through their stories, has helped her realize that she could represent
their culture in this fashion. "If you feel it is in your heart... then you
have to, don't you?" was a statement echoed over and over. With this
encouragement, Joel has intensely studied Indian lore and tradition.
Firsthand experience has culminated in the stunning visions she shares
with us.
Included in each picture are symbols, some readily visible and some
well hidden, representing the lore of the Native American Indian. Chief
among these symbols, as in the culture itself, are the turtle, the buffalo
and a circle representing the sun or the moon. The turtle has always
had a special place in Joel's heart and has led to her involvement in the
marine conservation with Sea Turtles, Inc. S. Padre, TX in the 90's.
IN 1988, Joel began to take her art to the public. She has had one
woman shows in Dallas and Plano, Texas, as well as Toledo, Ohio.
She has also exhibited in galleries in Plano, South Padre Island, Dallas,
San Antonio, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Joel has been with the American Indian Arts Council (AIAC) of Dallas for
the last 15 years. She is currently serving as the president of the board.
She has also been one of the coordinators for the annual (AIAC) Art
Festival and Market. Joel is also a volunteer speaker on American
Indian Ledger Book Paintings. She is also a founding member of the
Oak Point Artist's Society (OPAS) .
